How to Care for Sterling Silver and Gemstone Jewellery

Sterling silver and natural gemstones last for years with a few simple habits. This guide covers cleaning, storage and the stones that need extra care.

Why silver tarnishes

Sterling silver darkens over time as it reacts with sulphur compounds in the air and with moisture, perfume and some cosmetics. This is normal and easy to reverse, and it does not mean the piece is poor quality.

Everyday habits

  • Put jewellery on last, after perfume, hairspray and moisturiser.
  • Take it off before swimming, showering, cleaning or exercising.
  • Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after wearing to remove oils and sweat.

Cleaning

For bright silver, use a silver polishing cloth. For a deeper clean, wash gently in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap, rinse and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive pastes and ultrasonic cleaners on gemstone pieces unless you know the stone can take it.

Oxidised silver

Many of our pieces have an oxidised finish, where the recesses are darkened on purpose to give depth and a rustic look. Polish these lightly or not at all, because heavy polishing can remove the dark finish.

Softer stones need more care

Some gemstones scratch, chip or react to chemicals more easily than others. Be especially gentle with moonstone, malachite, lapis lazuli, pearl, apatite, iolite and labradorite. Avoid water and chemicals on malachite and pearl, keep these stones away from knocks, and store them separately from harder pieces.

Storage

Store each piece on its own in a small airtight bag or a lined jewellery box, away from heat, direct sunlight and humidity. Keep amethyst out of strong, prolonged sunlight, which can fade its colour. Anti-tarnish strips in the bag help slow tarnishing.
